NIKOLA (30), a disappointed idealist and a primary school teacher in Belgrade, leads a tedious life with no hope of ever getting over his ex-fiancé, his disengaged students, or the fact that he still lives with his parents until one day he gets a sudden proposition from a mysterious lawyer ANITA (55). She offers him to move to a rural village in western Serbia and work as a teacher there, for a significantly bigger salary and significantly fewer students – as part of a village renewal project her client has invested in. Despite her appearing out of nowhere and his suspicion that the deal is too good to be true, Nikola realizes his life isn’t going to change else he takes it.
Shortly after arriving at the village hotel his suspicions seem more and more justified as he encounters several obstacles right from the very beginning – the inhabitants are hostile and refuse to cooperate, their kids fear him and avoid going to school and the village seems much more isolated than he anticipated, including not having any phone reception or contact with other people. He soon starts suspecting other hotel guests – Doctor MARKO (34), his wife SOFIJA (31), and their son Viktor (8) - have also been brought to the village in the same weird way. To make matters worse, his solitude is soon accompanied by growing paranoia once he realizes that the hotel manager NENAD (32) is spying on the guests and following them. Nikola feels he would probably lose all touch with reality if not for LUCIJA (30) an easy-go lucky anthropologist who comes to the village to do research for her Ph.D. thesis which assumes great ethnological discoveries in this area. Although her actions continuously aggravate Nikola’s life, her lighthearted but determined nature makes him fall for her and the two of them develop some of relationship.
