Happy family – Rale and Mare

Everyday’a questions, problems and challenges of an ordinary family.

When people hear the phrase “a happy family,” they immediately picture a certain image— a perfect marriage full of compromise, passion, and mutual understanding, financial stability, well-behaved and obedient children. In short, a Christmas commercial. To be honest, we didn’t make a commercial—we made a sitcom. And in sitcoms, things don’t quite look like they do in commercials.

Rale is a perpetual Peter Pan, always dreaming and dreading school. That wouldn’t be so unusual if Rale weren’t fifty years old and a schoolteacher himself. On the other hand, Mare is the responsible one—a doctor on the verge of specializing. The two of them are a deeply in love married couple, but not the kind you see in commercials. For starters, they live in a rented apartment with Mare’s two rebellious kids from her previous marriage.
The story begins as they move into a new place, which quickly turns into a chaotic hub of endless mishaps. Their apartment is practically overrun by Rale’s possessive mother, Mare’s demanding father, an indifferent ex-husband, a dreamer of a best friend, a spiritual neighbor, a psychologist friend, a handyman, the mailman, their daughter’s boyfriends… In their always-crowded home, something is constantly breaking. Money is never enough. The kids—well, they’re kids, always pushing back. Everything is always late, there’s always some crisis, and yet, somehow, Rale and Mare manage to keep their family together. Just not in the way you’d expect from a commercial.
Okay, maybe we did lie a little. “A Happy Family” is a commercial—one that proves happiness exists outside of stereotypical images.

That is, if you manage to survive a hurricane of a person like Rale’s mother, for example…
