Based on a very popular novel by Jelena Bacic Alimpic (sold in 220.000 copies and translated in various languages) this series is a story about career and success of a young ballet dancer Ana Balint. Though she couldn’t stand any chances to achieve what she had achieved, European fame on the stage of Bolshoi theatre, being born on a small farm in Vojvodina, thanks to her exquisite talent Ana made it. She was born in an unhappy marriage, her mother, against her wealthy family’s will married a poor guy. Her childhood was marked by friendship with Djordje, a boy from the farm who will love her until death, though when they meet again, it will be too late for their love. Anna’s mother Lenka literally kidnaps her girl and takes her to Belgrade where she works as a maid so her daughter could have ballet lessons. It was difficult during the Second World War, but Anna’s talent was stronger than anything despite the pain she felt for leaving her father, her granny, her farm, her carousel and her friend Djordje. Thanks to the connections of her teacher and mentor Clara, Ana goes to Russia. Her legs were shivering when she set her foot on the Bolshoi theater stage, that seemed to be waiting for her as he was too, the one after whom nothing will ever be the same; her greatest love in life- a journalist and a critic, Sergey Pavlovic. Sergey was unhappily married, but the passion between him and Anna was so great that she was willing to leave everything behind. Yet, he will be the one who leaves her. She was being born and dying on the stage every night, it was work and the love of her closest friends that saved her from committing suicide. Ana won’t know the reason Sergey left her. When they met again, tied by tough love like by un umbilical cord, nothing will ever be the same again. She will put up with his darkness, finally she will become his wife, but she will never be happy because she will be hiding a terrible secret. And when she loses him for good, she’ll remain eternally incapable of loving anyone else- because it’s once in a life time love. Carousel, both book and a series is not just a story about eternal love between a man and a woman. It’s a story about people who are always there for us, who make us happy, whom we usually hurt first, but who stay by our side forever. This is a story about right and wrong choices. This is a story about a brilliant career through which we learn about culture and history of ballet, history of powerful Russia, but also about the modest farm life of the ’30 that inevitably disappeared. All that’s left is an old carousel where everything spins just as it does in life. Anna Balint is smiling on it.
